Work Laptop doesnt work on Home Wireless Network

I have a work laptop that is wireless and on a Domain, but when I bring it home, I want it to be able to pick up my wireless network at home.

I used static IPs at home, and am able to enter these as alternative IP address on the IP settings profile of the wireless network card.

But at home do I convince my laptop to change its domain only temporarily, as I dont want to mess up any settings.

Any suggestions?

Are you trying to connect to your work system using VPN, or just get on the internet?

You should be able to just login using your cached profile.

and use dhcp (do an ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew), to pick up your routers ip.. try it wired first. You'll need admin rights to change anything.

just trying to get on the internet, and access shared resources (files, folders and printers)

I used the standard WORKGROUP workgroup at home, but my work laptop has a Domain and a proper computer name.

What I need is a way of removing the domain, and being able to enter temporary IP details on the network card.

Being part of a domain means I am also unable to connect to any public wireless networks as well.

will creating a new Profile enable me to sort this out?

or this something a free/shareware/program can resolve?

If you have a password, you can login locally, by changing the domain dropdown box to the machine name. If you are using a router, use dhcp, and ipconfig/release and renew to pickup a local ip.

Don't understand the link, unless you don't have rights?

Some oganisations have security policies against home use and linking to home networks, so be careful what you do, if you inadvertently introduce a virus into your work system, after attaching to your home network, it may be treated as a disciplinary offence, depends on the employer..

Doesn't matter if the laptop is on a domain, you can still join your home network with it.

My home network is a basic workgroup and my work laptop (with domain too) runs fine through my router, either wired or wireless.

I think your problem is the static IP addresses you are using for your home network. Is there any reason you are doing it this way? Most wireless routers allow for a DHCP scope which is a lot easier to manage?

If you change your wireless router to issue DHCP addresses then I bet your work laptop will pick up an ip address it can use. Failing that you will need to give the wireless network adapter on your work laptop a static IP address that will allow it to work on your home network, and of course change it back when you are in work.

It will be so much easier if you use DHCP believe me.

Have you asked your network manager if there are any issues with logging into other networks? They may sort it out so you can whilst retaining the security.

I work for a company who are really anal about security (with good reason I know) and they used to refuse to let us access even our own home networks or the internet in customers or coffee shops etc. I had 2 lots of broadband in the house, they paid for one lot, we use a VPN to connect.

After a change of network management we now have one lot of BB in the house, I can pick up an internet connection anywhere and conect to the company servers by VPN.

  • I had this problem too. I went to https://www.download.com and downloaded a program called netswitch, which allows you to save your settings for each profile, meaning you can change at the click of a button. It works really well on my home system.
