  • On your present usage, you'd use up the Tier 1 allowance in about 2.5 weeks.

It was my understanding that the tier 1 figure of, for me of 2680 kWh, was a yearly figure and was averaged out over the year as 2680/365 which is 7.34 kWh per day. if so how can the tier 1 consumption be used in 2.5 weeks?

At least that is how it appears on my Eon bills. 91 days of tier 1 is given as 2680/365*91=668 kWh at tier 1 and the remainder at tier 2.

I have made a spreadsheet and that is how I calculate what my bill should be and it agrees with Eon's bill.

Have Eon and I been doing it wrong?

My real point was that the vast majority of your usage over a year is at Tier 2 rates. On your last bill, you've got 668kWh at Tier 1. How many at Tier 2?
Average annual consumption in the UK is around 16,500 kWh for properties with gas CH and DHW.

Thank you, when I spoke to Scottish power I was told that the first 640 khw per quarter would be charge at the higher rate and then the rest at the lower rate, the same with my electricity. I think I will give them a call to double check this.

So, if your average quarterly bill is say 4,500kWh, only 14% of that is at the higher rate. 86% is at 3.5p.

Thank you for taking the time to help.

The thermostat is in the hall it's not set at anything if it goes cold I turn it on to about 18/9.

The 2 bathroom radiators are the towel rail type - no thermostat

Hall, kitchen and living room have dials on them from 0 - 5 these are all set at 5.

I think bedroom is switched off. Ds room no thermostat, dd room not to sure.

My yearly use from march to march was 1566.40 kwh

That cannot be an annual gas usage, it's way too low, by a factor of about 10?
Your hall thermostat setting is not too bad at 18 or 19. Leave the hall radiator turned fully on as the thermostat will never see any heat if it is turned down. You could possibly turn down the other two radiators a little. Do you have a timer controlling the boiler for heating? If so, you might want to look at when it is on. If your hallway is particularly cold or poorly insulated, you might find that whenever the heating is on due to the timer, the thermostat is also causing the whole house to be heated unnecessarily.
Both the timer and the main thermostat must demand heat for the heating to be on and burning gas.

What you are doing is correct.
But don't forget it is not a daily allowance. If you use no gas on a particular day, it doesn't mean you have effectively got rid of that day's allocation of tier 1 units.
The annual allowance is taken pro-rata across each billing period, so that the first allocation of kWh used is charged at tier 1 prices regardless of when it was used in the billing period.
Hence the comment that it would be used up in 2.5 weeks.
Equally, you can say it equates to a daily standing charge of the difference between tier 1 and tier 2 prices times the annual kWh allowance divided by 365, then all usage charged at the tier 2 rate.
