Help with Vaillant Timeswitch 140

My Vaillant Ecotec boiler has the above timeswitch and I've looked through the operating manual and can't find an answer to my question.

At the moment it's time to come on at 7am for a couple of hours and at 6pm for four hours. I shall change the timings soon and I think I can understand the instructions enough to do that.

However, I noticed during the day today that it says "Summer Mode" (the boiler was off). Is there a "Winter Mode" and do I have to do anything? I can't see anything in the manual about it. I know the clock changed automatically when the clocks went back in October.

Sorry if it's a dumb question only my husband used to do all this stuff and he passed away last month and I'm trying to learn all about things I never had to do before.

Go to the vaillant website and search for timeswitch 140 operating instructions. These should be sufficient for your purpose.

I have the operating instruction booklet as mentioned, but I've gone to their website and the pdf is the same as the instruction manual that I have. I've also googled Vaillant Timeswitch 140 but I can't find anything about whether or not there is a winter mode and what summer mode actually means.

I think that you are confusing the timeswitch 140 module (which is optional) with the boilers control panel. There is no Summer Mode on the timeswitch but when the boiler is in Summer Mode, it simply means that Heating Mode is switched OFF i.e. not required during summer. Google for the Operating Manual for your particular ecoTech boiler and download that.

Thank you Espresso, I've had another look and yes, I'm looking at the panel to the left of the timeswitch and thinking it's part of the timeswitch and not realising it's the boiler control panel :o.

I've got the instruction manual for the boiler and have looked through it. It was because it was saying "Summer Mode" that I was thinking maybe there is a Winter Mode and I should be doing something to change it over to that.

Just to get it straight in my scrambled brain, if I change the timer to come on say for 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the evening, does the "Summer Mode" message display during the off period? And if I change the timer so that it comes on in the morning and stays on all day until about 10pm then because there's no off period during the day then the "Summer Mode" message wont come on?

Sorry, I feel so stupid asking these questions but I just want to get it straight and understand it. There's so many new things I'm having to tackle since OH passed away.

You will need to read the manual for your model as they may be different but on the ecoTEC plus 937 that a relative has, there are two rotary knobs to the left of the boilers main display. The top one adjusts the hot water temp and the bottom one adjusts the central heating flow temp. If this bottom knob is rotated fully anti-clockwise, that switches Heating Mode to OFF (Summer Mode). The timeswitch simply programs the various ON, OFF times for the days of the week.

Thanks again Espresso. Yes, my boiler has the same two knobs. The central heating knob goes from 30 degrees to 75 degrees and at the moment is set at 48 for when it is on. The heating mode hasn't been turned to OFF for some time so that's probably why I was wondering why "Summer Mode" was being displayed.

I've just put the heating on as it's quite cold here today and it's showing "Heating Mode". I'll have to adjust the times now I think.

I tend to overthink things when trying to understand them, I should just accept that it comes on and goes off when it's set to do so and that I can override it when I want to. Thank you for your patience in explaining things, much appreciated.
