What tech are people looking forward to next year for their new or upgrade laptop / desktops?
The following are all released in 2012 and are on my wish list:
Ivy Bridge CPU
DDR4 SDRAM
Windows 8
Nvidia's Kepler GPU
Updated:
SSD
USB 3.0

- Considerable reduction in price of hard disks
- Considerable reduction in price of SSDs
- Considerable increase in reliability of SSDs
- Considerable increase in available money...

Cant see any point in junking my dell d630 until it runs slow, its pretty fast with 4gb ram, and ssd hybrid drive.
And when I do upgrade, I wont be paying for anything brand new, as it just drops in price like a stone in water shortly after release anyway.[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.

The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that[/redtitle](house of lords debate, talking about Cameron)0 -
Unlike Vista I am in no rush to replace a stable OS which I like.0

I'll buy new next year though. Hardware is pretty cheap nowadays and for the reliability and less chance of it being dropped first hand it's worth it in my opinion.0 -
Some components and peripherals that can actually utilise USB 3.0.0

I hear you guys! I'm running an Acer, 1GB RAM, AMD Turion ML-34, ATI Radeon X700, 6 years old over here! 1 mobo swapped out after ~14 months and not a peep since.

I don't like the look of Win8 (ok it's still beta but who wants a touch screen for a real PC)
I would like the Ubuntu (or canonical) to sort out USB 3.0 support like this year never mind 2012.
The thing I would really like is for programmers to start thinking about RAM as if it was still limited to say 64k and return to good practices rather than forgetting about clearing up after endless malloc's without free's4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . I'll still be using my 2009 Macbook Pro. Going on the cycle count so far, the battery is still good for at least another 4 or 5 years. Don't do any gaming so my desktop will be staying as it is too. Only upgraded it last year, 4 years after the previous upgrade, and even that was just a motherboard and CPU change.
For most peoples usage, computers have been fast enough now for about half a decade.0 -

Get out more :rotfl:
People asked the same question back in Windows95 days, sure enough the hardware improved, but software always leads it.
Everything will remain slow and cumbersome, it will just get a little prettier on the way.0 -
Won't make you type any quicker. Won't make the internet any quicker.
99% of my time on a computer is spent waiting on the CPU! So I'm pretty interested in Intel's latest roadmaps.
Should be quite a few laptops coming out mid 2012 with Ivy Bridge, hopefully low power and good integrated graphics, at the moment the trade off is pretty steep.
Hoping the HDD factories start to re-open asap, and SSD prices continue to drop. Had my eye on a Crucial M4 for a while now but it's still a little bit too high.
Also I have no interest in Windows 8!0
