Item stolen from repair shop, shop doesn't have insurance, help?

Hi,

My brother took his laptop a local computer shop for the screen to be repaired on Saturday 5th of November. He went to get it on Saturday 12th and only then did they tell him that they had a break in on Monday 7th and his laptop was stolen.

The shop isn't insured and didn't have a burglar alarm. :mad:

He has a crime number and the police have recovered some of the computers but not his.

What can he do other than claim it on his own insurance? I can't believe that companies can run stores like that and have no responsibility for it. I want to read what he signed when he left it for them to repair, but don't have access to it at the moment.

Any advice is much appreciated.

    Claim from the shop, it's not your brothers fault that his laptop was stolen, send a letter to the shop owner telling them you want them to pay you the value of the laptop, if they refuse, send a letter before action, then small claims court.
    If at first you don't succeed, maybe bomb disposal isn't the best career choice.

    Your brother should not be concerned whether the shop has insurance or not.

    Thank you for the advice.

    I contacted consumer direct who said it is likely that they are in breach of the Supply of Goods & Services Act and to write to them using a letter from their website. Send it recorded delivery and include a time scale within which they have to reply. If they don't reply within the time frame then I have to contact consumer direct again.
