How to claim for compensation after no gas for 3 and a half days?

Hey all,
Due to a burst water pipe leaking hundreds or thousands of litres of water into the gas pipes, I and many others have been without gas since Thursday night / Friday morning. I have to give National Grid credit for doing their best to get things fixed as soon as possible.
We've just had our gas reconnected, and I'm trying to get the house back to normal temperatures again. Obviously 3 and a half days without warm water or heating hasn't been fun, and I'm wondering if there's any way to claim compensation? The best I can find on the internet is that you're entitled to £30 per 24 hours, but I have no idea how to go about claiming it.
If anyone could help me out it would be much appreciated. We could use the money to put towards this months electricity bill which I'm sure will be more than what we're used to.

Hi there
We had a problem with or gas being switched off for 5 1/2 days (luckily it was summer) National Grid informed us that a letter would be sent from our gas supplier (NPower) to inform us of the compensation. They did send this letter out and said a cheque would be sent in a few weeks.
Watch out though because the cheque was only for 3 days as they hadn't counted the weekend!
Ours took longer than the flat downstairs as they had to put up scaffolding which was a pain.
Must admit that National Grid were very good with their communication.
Good luck with getting the money through and i'd advise you to chase the utility supplierEngaged 25/12/2013 :T

Thank you
I do hope the weekend will be counted as well, as it was mostly weekend and it's not like we suddenly didn't need to use the electric heating during those days. I'll keep my eyes open for a notification, and if nothing arrives in the next few days I'll chase up the gas supplier instead.0 -
I remember the days a "Sorry" was acceptable when someone made a mistake now people want compensation for everything these days

The compensation is usually paid automatically. This can either be by cheque or as a credit onto your bill.
The compensation will be paid to you or your gas supplier within 20 working days otherwise you will receive a further £20 payment.

Is your heating gas or electric?
It's central heating, so on gas, but due to the lack of gas we've had to borrow electric heating and use that. The 'compensation' I want isn't so much for the trouble, I would just like payment for the extra spending on electricity (mainly the heating that we now had to use) and having to spend nearly £20 on a suitable sleeping bag to keep my daughter warm. At 20 months she won't stay under a guild or blankets, so sleeping bag was required with us not being able to keep the heating on during the night for her.
We've received a letter this evening with an apology and explanations regarding compensation. By the sound of things it will all be done automatically, though I think DH will call tomorrow just to make sure.
Thanks all0
