Paypal: Warning

Hi all

Apologies if this has already been mentioned!

I have been receiving emails from what is supposed to be paypal. The emails are titled 'receipt for XXX'. In all honesty they look like the normal paypal receipt emails. You are asked to click on the link to find out more information.

I closed the email down and logged onto paypal as I normally would and the amount quoted in the 'receipt' didn't exist! I have reported these emails directly to paypal.

So just to warn you all that it looks like a very well thought out scam! If you receive any emails from paypal that look suspicious don't click on any 'log in here' links...!!

Good Luck
Katie :)

  • Unfortunatly they are very common :(

forward to www.spoof@paypal.com and delete from your messages.

when has an email started with www.

the actual email is spoof@paypal.com and you need to send the email along with full header information .

i would also report the email to http://www.spamcop.net/
  • Thanks for that. Yes I have reported it already but just wanted to make people aware of it, the message looked like it did come from paypal so hopefully people can double check before clicking on any links
  • I too have been receiving these emails, which do look very plausible. What is even more worrying is that it usually mentions a company that I have dealt with recently.

I am concerned that somehow someone knows what I have been buying although no real details. When I tried to report it to paypal via their site I was warned off by my McAfee protection. All this is making me feel very vulnerable.

I've had a couple of these, but ignored them as I knew that they didn't correspond to things I had purchased.

Is the scam just hoping that people will just log in and pay without checking? I find it hard to believe that people who use Paypal don't remember what they have bought. Or is there more to it? I really can;t figure this one ouT!
  • The first one I had, which I fortunately didn't answer asked me to confirm that I had paid a certain amount for a certain product. It is very tempting to click in and check whether a mistake has been made. I do remember what I have bought, but not necessarily the date or amount that I paid.

I have had things like this in the past, such as receipts for Rolex watches that I've supposedly bought.

I always log into paypal separately, not clicking on any links in the email, to check my account is ok and then just forward the email to paypal as above and delete it.

I received a scam PayPal email a while back. I can't remember the exact content, but PayPal have said that one way of checking if it's a phoney email is if it addresses you by something generic like "Dear PayPal customer". PayPal will always use your name when emailing you.

When this happened to me, I contacted Paypal and the guy that I talked to told me that the easiest way to find out of it is genuine is whether the email has addressed you by your full name. If it hasn't, it is likely to be a fake email, but I would always be wary about emails like this any way. Hth.

if your tempted to think something is wrong with your account don't click on the email link, always open in another page.

But just to put a twist on this, i often get these and ignore them, and then had an email telling me my account was suspended.

i logged in using another page to find it had been suspended, and the person i was buying from on ebay had been informed i was a hacker.

i rang paypal and asked what was going on..... seems some little twit in asia had tried to use my paypal details to go on a spending spree, but paypal had clicked that it might not be me, emailled me to verify (the emails i ignored).

so now there is a marker on my account that i requested that if an attempt to use my paypal account outside the UK, it will not be me.
