white phone sockets problem

Hi I wonder if anyone can help!

I apologize if I'm posting in the wrong place. I have 2 white phone sockets in my property, one in the living room and the other in the bedroom. I tested both sockets: the living room socket has a dial tone and the internet is also plugged into that connection without problem. The socket in the bed room had no dial tone. I removed this box from the wall and cut the wires. However i no longer have any dial tone in the living room or internet connection!
-

Can anyone advise on what work needs to be done?
-

Whether it’s best to call my provider (Talk Talk) to get this fixed?
-

And how much it is likely to cost? or if there's a more appropiate place to post!

Many thanks

Danielle

Has either box got a split faceplate?

  • Hi Penrhyn

    Many thanks for your reply.

Not that i recall, but i will have to check this evening. I don't think the box i removed looked like that.

    Best wishes

Make sure the act of cutting the wires in the bedroom has not left any of the 6 individual wires shorting with any of the others (there's only likely to be 50 volts so no danger of electrocution).

If that doesn't solve the problem or you need anything else done, call a local electrician to sort the problem, not Talk Talk. That's likely to save you £100 at least.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

As it was you who cut the cable, the responsibility to fix will mean it is charged to you. You may be unaware as to how the system is wired, and that the socket you don't use is actually feeding the one you use... so you may need to reconnect it unless it is genuinely only a spur. You'll need a professional to sort this out if you cannot do this yourself.

Not possible to advise on what work needs to be done, because you have not given enough information on what you have done and how your system [is] was wired.

My best guess is that you had 2 cables coming to the bedroom socket, which was wired wrongly, so it didn't work, but in being wired wrongly, it linked colour for colour, so the other socket was able to work.

  • Many thanks for all of your replies,

    - Penrhyn - i don’t have one of those split boxes in the house and the one removed didn’t look like a split box.

The master socket was the socket we took off of the wall, here are photos of the remaining box (i can PM if interested i can't post links...or the photos!):

If so, is possible to connect a new cable from outside to this socket? Any idea how much time this would take (quotes I have received have been in hourly rates)?

Buzby - Yes! Very frustrating, i usually do a lot of research before removing/decorating/painting etc....but not in the case and will have to pay!

DVardysShadow - you are correct; we had 2 cables coming into the bedroom socket.
