I seem to have broken my pc - help!

Hi All,

Yesterday I set to cleaning up my pc by uninstalling programs I don't need, putting big files on an external hard drive, etc. I uninstalled something fairly innocuous and was asked to reboot my pc, which I did.

Problem is now I try to boot my pc it shows the screen with the motherboard manufacturer (no options to press anything though) and then a blank screen with a single blinking line like it's waiting for some sort of input, although I can't input anything.

So my thinking is that my pc is somehow goosed, luckily all my important files are on an external drive. Any ideas how I can format the hard drive and reinstall Windows? I'm thinking of taking the hard drive out and formatting it via another pc?

All help is gratefully received!

Make and model? Operating system? Do you have discs....? You appear to be dazed and confused.

Do you get a list of start options if you tap the F8 key just after starting the PC?

If so, choose safe mode with command prompt, then type

    rstrui.exe

    then press enter

See if you have a restore point from a couple of days ago
  • Very much so! I'm on Windows 7 basic home edition, got the disc somewhere. The pc is a bit of a mongrel as I made it myself a while ago.

Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 4850
Processor: Intel Dual Core E6300 2.80Ghz
    Motherboard: MSI 775 INTEL G31 2xDDR2 mATX

    Hope this helps

Hi, I don't get the options to press F8 anywhere which seems pretty odd to me?

You just start the PC and then keep tapping the F8 key until it shows a list of options, or carries on and goes to the flashing cursor

Do you mean Home Premium? Built it yourself? So you have the OS disc.

Try Startup Repair(skip to Startup Repair)

If you have installed SP1, you might wish to install an SP1 disc.
  • Try unplugging the external drive and reboot.
