Ginger?

This is probably a very thick question, but can I buy ginger in pureed form, or in a jar of some sort as you can with garlic, and if so, where is it in the supermarket, please?

I am doing an online Tesco shop now but can't find it anywhere...

  • Yes you can, it's not cheap but very handy.
Barts is good, try under herbs/spices, or Oriental foods? Don't think I've seen it in Tesco laterly thoug, the last one I got was Sainsburys.
Tesco do their own but I don't like it, it's in quite big bits, not a puree.

It is £1.47 and preserved in white vinegar :( Can you not buy root ginger and grate it finely?

  • In the world foods section there's usually minced/pureed ginger in with the Indian foods. You can also get garlic and chilli like this as well.

Thanks both. Knew I'd get the answer on here!

Yes, at that price I will grate my own!

I thought it would be more economical as we won't use lots of it, but I'll stick to fresh and just bin it if it doesn't get used.

I bought some fresh ginger yesterday from the local Asian grocers. I peeled it and used my mini chopper to puree it, popped it into a freezer bag, flattened it and then when I need it I can just break a little piece off to use. Keeps for months then.

I buy pure ginger puree from the asian shop - frozen in ice cube size blocks. its actually cheaper than buying and grating my own and no waste - win win

I buy fresh ginger, peel it, grate it and freeze it in ice-cube trays. If it has grated up rather dry, add a teaspoon of water to each cube before freezing. Once frozen, I turn out the cubes and store in an old soup container in the freezer. The peelings go into a separate container for "ginger tea" when my throat is sore (put some peelings in a mug, pour over boiling water, add a squirt of lemon juice, leave to steep until cool enough to drink).

  • As you have an anser. I'll move this to the Groceries Board to see if the experts there can give you more suggestions :)

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies.
