How strange then, the gap appears to have increased sincy Davy boy took over :)

presumably demonstrates that the current administration is better at fiddling figures that the last one...

both the claimant count and the unemployment stat are pretty useless indicators especially when taken without any context at all. it's more useful to look at numbers like the total population; the total number of people in full time employment; the total number in part time employment; and the total number of people of working age who are economically inactive.

Around 2.5 billion people in India and China have joined the global labour market in the past 20 years. The UK needs to compete in all levels. Cost, productivity, and most importantly skills.

Now is the time to start a new business. Even its just on a 5 -9 basis. Days of secure employment are over for many.

Speak tough while in opposition, change absolutely nothing when they get power.

They can't actually do much in power anyway.

Before they're elected, they're either they're naive and believe that they can change things or they know they can't but pretend they can to get elected. I'd say the likes of Vince Cable is the former and the likes of Ed Balls are the latter.

All they can do is tinker around the edges, hog-tied to Brussels, the financial markets and the super-rich who really control the world's economy.

All the headline grabbing initiatives just turn into damp squibs as they're watered down so much to keep the vested interests happy.

They're just as much puppets as are we mere citizens.

It's happening right now in the jobs market. Lack of confidence, lack of action just extends the pain.

Obama carried on spending and now they've set up the super committee to install rapid cuts, even to education.

So it would appear your call for 'action' is misplaced if that means increasing debt and thus increasing interest paid to the markets.

It's not just the loss of jobs, but the timing of the announcement of these losses.

How often do we come across stories at this time of year where someone is told they are no longer required during the final weeks before Xmas / New Year ? It happened to 2 of my relatives last year - the week before Christmas. What a sickener. :(

Approaching Christmas is when it comes apparent to most companies in difficulty if they can survive or not. As its not profitability that hits companies but a lack of cash.

Well if I were to become unemployed I would be able to claim all of 65 quid a week for 6 months which in the scheme of things is hardly worth doing and nothing after the 6 months (it is called being foolish and having savings) so I can quite see why their would be a deviation between the two series.

Same here, im now banned from the benefits system because i have a house deposit in the bank.

No wonder people drop out of society.

Not good news at all unfortunately.

No doubt the response will be to drag it out even more. I have to say, even Tony Blair had an epiphany on the Andrew Marr show, but I guess he can be sensible now as he's not searching for votes. He stated anything we should have done before, we now have to do even more of today because the problem is bigger. I..e the longer you hold off, the worse it gets.

Of all the firms me and my workmates work for in the construction industry, not one of them is taking on cards in anymore. Everybody who is lucky enough to get a start around here has to work for the firms via the self employed route now because a lot of them nearly went under paying redundancies over the last couple of years.

I even know of some "mature apprentices" who are on 1 month rolling contracts.
