Barclaycard fraud - advice please

Hi

Basically i was woken up this morning at 7.50am by Barclaycard Fraud Department who said that they were concerned that my card was being used fraudently (if thats a word!).

They ran through some transactions, virgin trains, tesco mobiles, internet information websites etc, all were not me. The card was stopped instantly and they are sending a new one with forms to dispute the amounts and they say that i should get my money back within 10 days of sending it back in.

Problem is im a little worried as to where the fraudsters got the details from. I never use the card, except for on the internet to reputable companies and i hardly ever use it. I used it in November to buy some concert tickets and that was the last time it was used.

Im thinking maybe they are tapped into my computer? Or perhaps they have got it off Paypal? Im not sure. Anyone know where they can get them from if you dont use the cards out in the streets? If they are on my computer tracking what i do is there a way of checking and if so getting rid? I have done ad aware, spy bot and avg checks and all were just what i get normally.

Thanks all.

  • Well it could be a keylogger virus on your computer, or it could be someone from the one safe site that you used, or even someone perhaps in your place of work or leisure who just took the details of the card without stealing it as not to draw attention to it.
The possibilities are endless - just thank Barclaycard for being vigilant.

I hope you run a firewall (eg Zone Alarm) and anti virus (eg AVG) as well as adaware and spybot to clean your system.
All these are freely available - I have been using them for years and so far have not had any problems.

Probably a silly thought, but do you shred all your financial stuff (assuming that you do get paper copies of your Barclaycard statements)?

As you say, well done to Barclaycard for being proactive on this.

Have you discussed any card details over the phone through any foreign-based call centre lately? TV news report a few months back showed how card details were being ripped of by call-centre crooks. British companies contracting out the call centre work to companies abroad. These crooks then sold the details back to british crooks. See one of the stories ...

You may like to ask Barclays if they can confirm if Virgin Trains, Tesco Mobiles and wherever else your card details were used embraced Card Verification Value (CVV) - the 3 numbers on the back of your card) and Adresss Verification System (AVS). This should give you an idea of just how much information the fraudsters acquired.

Remember to report this to the Police.

I was very interested in this as my Egg card was used fraudulently last December. I received a call one evening from Egg to query if I had used my card for online gambling (I don't even buy a lottery ticket!). When I replied no, all the necessary steps for replacing the card were carried out etc. I rarely use this card and had only made two recent online transactions. I too am puzzled how this information was obtained. Following this I received an odd letter advising me my online facility had been cancelled and my name was being forwarded to the debt collectors. I had never heard of the company on the letterhead. Eventually I wrote back to them pointing out I had no idea who they were, what they did or why they were pursuing me. I did not put my address on the letter or sign it but returned it with their letter. I have not heard anything since.

Heard that people working in the actual call centre have been known to sell customer details?

Thanks all for the responses. In answer to all the questions raised.

Everything is shredded, problem is we use a cheap shredder so a cross cut one will now be purchased!!

The only place that the card has been used on the net is a well known company who is the master of tickets!!! - this is the only time the card has been used in 6 months.

I havent informed the police, should i?

As everyone has said well done to barclaycard for noticing. Im very very impressed with them and the service so far. Got a letter today with the amounts they were concerned about. They hit me 2 days on the trot, all transactions taking place between 20.00 and 20.14, ranging in values from 2 pence to £35.

I have spoken to Barclaycard and the person must have had my CCV number so even more to worry about.

Im going to follow the steps in the thread and going to post over on techie, thanks again all.
