Presents for Nursery teachers

  • as a nursery teacher, i do appreciate all gifts but i do prefer some over others . so without being contentious, this is how i'd sum it up
go go gos - choc (aldi is my current fave!), nice stationery, bubble baths/shower gels, elegant tree decoration,
no no nos - mugs, items with childrens photo on, bath sets with things in that you rarely use ie bath cubes/pumice stones, candles,

Have you thought about putting the money for all 5 together and getting a box of items such as coffee, tea bags, biscuits, hot choc, tea towels etc for the staff room???

BTW, any HM items i get such as HM tree decorations, HM xmas ornaments, i keep them in school to decorate the classroom or the classroom tree (and get them out every year) as i prefer to have my own childrens handiwork at home on our family tree.
  • I agree, homemade gifts are fab.... last year the favourite was a jar of pesto made by the child with instructions, ingredients and a photo!

For my dd's class all the parents put money in and they get a voucher, flowers & chocolates much easier - and often cheaper too

every year this topic pops up and every year people get their noses put out of joint by people who are in profession saying dont give hand made/home made knick knacks/food as lovely as it is they dont want little angels bogeys in stuff they eat or hanging round their house - they have their own families for this sort of thing. Same with best teacher mugs/teddies/paperweights etc
Id go for a generic choc and a nice card - hand made cards always go down well from previous years listings.

So from own experiences and past board posts
no goes - home made food/ornaments, best teacher stuff, crap smellies you wouldnt want yourself
    go goes - chocs/wine/decent smellies/gift vouchers

However youll also get the teacherson here saying they dont want 27 bottles of red wine when they only drink white or rose or they didnt want choc as they on a diet. Basically your damned if you do damned if you dont -
Id try and organise a collection to get a decent voucher even if its 5 childrens parents all putting in £2 (less than youd spend on smellies) then a £10 next etc voucher would be gratefully recieved by most!!
Love is the answer. At least for most of the questions in my heart,
Like why are we here? And where do we go?And how come it's so hard?
It's not always easy,And sometimes life can be deceiving,
I'll tell you one thing, its always better when we're together

i worked in schools for years and have to say i was grateful for each and every gift,at the end of the day they didnt have to give us gifts. and yes i have young children too so anything handmade from my children or the children at school was lovely, much more personal and dont believe teachers on here who say they dont want choccies as once there in the staffroom they guzzle them down. a lovely handmade card made by the child is very personal at any age xx
:xmastree:Is loving life right now,yes I am a soppy fool who believes in the simple things in life :xmastree:
  • As I said I work in a nursery and all homemade gifts are greatly revived if the are things for the tree etc they tend to stay in the room at nursery and I keep them up all through the year then once the children have moved rooms they come home and a have a box of home made stuff of the children I work with that I look through regulary although any gift goes
Down very well in my nursery as we don't expect any gifts of the children!!

  • As i said earlier my kids made decorated baubles, they didn't look brilliant but THEY made them, the teachers were really pleased which made them feel really good about it (perhaps falsely but who will ever know - certainly not my kids). Christmas is about GIVING not receiving, my children are learning that for a little effort you can get back a lovely warm feeling when you are thanked. It cost me little (we are after all on MSE) the children enjoyed making them and giving them, they were put on the school tree, if they never made it home so what? (some) teachers do a great job, but at the end of the day it is their job, i am sure they don't teach the kids better or worse depending on what gift they get for Christmas, and i sincerely hope they don't expect a present!!

I think a nicely written card thanking them for the work they have done is always gratefully received. If you wish to give them a gift then that is just a lovely extra. Homemade gifts are very thoughtful however I would steer away from home made food.
Taking responsibility one penny at a time!
