Question on submitting own meter reading

My gas acccount is with EDf energy and I have been receiving estimated gas bills since I have been with them.

On my latest bill (January) the meter estimate is much smaller than my true meter reading so I have submitted this to them on-line. (I have now signed up to send them readings each quarter so I shouldn't get estimated bills in the future).

My questions are:
  • The true reading I have submitted is also less than the estimate on my previous bill (October). Will this matter?
  • Will I get a credit to my account or a cash refund (my account is currently in credit)
  • How do they know which gas was used when (given that charges have increased in this period)?
I hope someone with more experience can help.

It might trigger them to query it, or send a meter reader round, but it's not an uncommon occurrance for estimates to drift way out like this.

They probably won't issue a refund unless you have asked for one. It's cheaper for them to reduce your payments accordingly when they normally review your account.

They will use your new reading to generate a new estimate for the date of the price change. They will probably go back as far as the last actual reading they have to recalculate the proportion of units used at each price.
