Am I eligible for Severe Disability Premium?

I am on ESA (IB) in the Work Related Group. My DLA has recently been looked at again and I now receive the middle rate for Care but still the lower rate for Mobility (which I have been told to appeal as I should be eligible for the higher rate due to being registered blind). I currently live with parents who provide my care needs - they work full time and do not receive Carer's Allowance.

Putting this all in context, would I be eligible for the Severe Disability Premium?

  • Hi I work for the Derbyshire Unemployed Workers Centre and just seen your message, from what you have told me you would be eligible for SDP however I need to check for sure for you before I can confirm for definite. Can I ask how old you are please.

The unemployed in Derby better beware of your advice.

Sorry to say but you are NOT entitled to the SDP while at home.

I don't think you are eligible.
The Severe Disability Premium Single rate

If you're single, you may get the lower rate premium if you:
    • live alone
    • no one gets Carer's Allowance for looking after you
    • you get the middle or highest care component of Disability Living Allowance

Exceptions to the 'living alone' rule

In some cases the person you look after can be treated as living alone even if they're not. For example, if a couple were living together and both received AA or middle or highest rate care DLA (and no one receives Carer’s Allowance for looking after either of them) they may both be able to have severe disability premiums or additions included in their means-tested benefit.

  • Many thanks for clarifying that.

It appears that you are not entitled to the SDP as mentioned above you must be classed as living alone i.e. no adult non-dependents living with you who are not registered blind or qualify for SDP. In some rare cases there can be additional exceptions, for example your house has two kitchens. If you are awarded Higher Rate Care DLA then an enhanced disability premium would be added to your ESA-IR applicable amount.
Don't thank me, thank my post :T
