Removing Economy 7 Meter / ECH

Options
My boyfriend and I are moving into a new flat soon hopefully.
It has wet electric central heating and currently has an Economy 7 meter.
We don't like the thought of having to get up in the middle of the night to do our laundry, and we don't have an immersion shower, so we think we would be better off on a single rate tariff rather than Economy 7.

Can we just phone our current supplier, and ask them to change the meter? We're with British Gas.

Any other advice on electric central heating would be great too, as I've grown up with oil fired and don't know anything about electric.

  • Hi,

I moved into my flat a year ago and have only ever grown up with gas central heating. We moved in when it had snowed so we put our heating on to warm to place up pretty much all day. Then I would use the hearing when I got in from work up until I went robed. Our bill came in at about £230 for that month! I then realised we were in economy 7. I could not understand this as we had wet electric heating. So I got the meter changed an converted to standard tariff. I then went out and bought a convector heater as I found the huge radiator in the lounge didnt seem to heat up the room that fast. So far our dd is set to £70per month and that seems to be fine. But I think the whole time I have misunderstood how the system works. This winter I really wanted to start using the timers and thermostats in the correct way like gas central heating. I did a little test run one evening and I was shocked at the amount of units our radiators used per hour. I don't think I can afford to run it like that on the standard rate. I'm also stuck with what I should do as I have already had the meter changed. I do my washing during the day and also would not want to do it at night... Is your system the Aztec boiler? Do you know if this system is supposed to heat up and store water over night and then you can leave your radiators on in the day to use that heat without using electric? I havent a clue how it works and I've just been using one convector heater so far.. Thanks

BG may just combine the dual rate meter readings-ask them.
Any rewiring work required downstream of the meter is up to you though.
