Facebook want mobile 'phone number

FB went through a spell recently of asking me for a phone number when I logged in, I just ignored it and nothing bad has happened. They seem to have stopped asking now.0

Mobile Phone number, your friend should be able to skip past that screen by clicking on "Home", because FB have just rejigged the interface...
I've just spoken to them re the "home" info, but when they log in there isn't any option to do this. The only option is to enter the 'phone number to continue. There are no other options available on the screen. They tried clicking on the facebook logo to see if that took them to a home page, but nothing happened at all.
As mentioned, their concern is that if they enter (even a made up 'phone number) if they had registered one originally (not sure they did), then wouldn't it cause a discrpancy and then they might block the account anyway?0 -

How did you ignore it? They can't get past the page where FB are asking for the 'phone number. They said there's only a continue button, which when they clicked, it said "you haven't entered your 'phone number".0 -
as part of their secuirty measures they have enabled a feature that if you log on to their site and you are using a computer that you do not normally use they then send a code to your mobile for you to then input into the system to let you on, you can even save that "computer" for the next time. ie I use the one at home but go to my MIL and use their computer, because it does not know it (ip address I think it useses) then it asks to send a code to the mobile for me to input and then log on. it can be disabled in the account settings - security - login approvals. when it is first enabled it does ask you to input your mobile number in. I have a smiliar set up with paypal that when I log on I have to get a random code sent to my phone that I then input to allow me to carry on with the log in.0

According to Facebook-
Why is Facebook asking me to confirm my identity by providing my phone number?
This is a security measure to help ensure that Facebook remains a community of people using their real identities to connect and share. If you ever lose your password, you’ll also be able to use your mobile number to access your account.
To access your Facebook account, just follow the on-site instructions to add your mobile phone number.
I also came across an answer when it happened to me saying that it was to stop people having more than one account (like I'd use the same phone number to register two accounts!)
The simplest solution I found was to get a free pay as you go sim (or ten) - most of the phone companies give them away and use that card/number to confirm. If the phone's unlocked get any, if not they're limited to their own provider.0 -

Yes, thanks, this is what we decided would be the best option for them. Fortunately, they use Pay As You Go anyway, so will just get a new SIM. Just hope that if they registered a number when they opened the account it won't cause any problems as the numbers won't match.0 -
I must admit that whenever i have encountered this using my mobile on FB there is always the option to 'skip' it and not enter any number. I never get it on my home PC though."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0

This has happened to me today too! I'm just trying to log on from home and can't bypass the "please complete a security check" screen. I have to get a code texted to me in order to log in but I'm not prepared to enter my mobile number.
I only use it for competitions, but its stil pretty frustrating!!0
