What are the implications of leaving a job at the end of a temp contract?

Im currently on a contract in an office which is due to end in a few months time. To put it bluntly, I absolutely hate it there, I want to leave as soon as possible, and I have no interest in a permanent position. Unfortunately, my boss has implied that she would like me to stay on permanantly "if I would like to".
Im looking for another office job, but theres not much out there, possibly because its close to Christmas. What are the implications of turning down a permanent position when my contract ends? If I havnt found another job, Im basically chosing unemployment over work.
However, Im fairly confident I would find work quite quickly, as I always have done in the past, and to be quite honest, Im just not happy at this job and my mental state/health has not been good since Ive worked there and I personally feel I have to put that above anything else.
Does anyone have any advice/ever been in a similar position?

If you are confident you will get another job then good luck but as you have said also there is not a lot out there as not many companies take on before Xmas as there is not a lot of shift in staff if people are waiting to get their Xmas bonus and the like.
You are actually making yourself unemployed so IF you went to sign on you would have to tell the truth that the contract ended and you were offered the role but never took it - they will want proof or write to the job to check.

Thanks for your advice, signing on and claiming jobseekers isnt a necessity for me, so it wouldnt be the end of the world if they said I couldn't.0

What are the implications of leaving a job at the end of a temp contract?
Other than the JSA situation mentioned above, the implications of leaving are that (a) you might not have a job for six months or more and (b) your current employer (if this is a direct hire and not via an agency) might not want to trouble themselves to give you a reference for the time you have been there.
If you really hate the job and aren't worried about not being able to claim JSA (and presumably not worried about not having income from paid employment), then why not resign rather than wait till the end of your contract. There must be some kind of notice period.0 -
Why not try and fix the problems?
They want you then let them know whats wrong and give them a chance to fix things.0 -

Its my CV/future references which concerns me more than the JSA situation. If I stick the contract out I can say I left because the contract ended. To leave a job half way through a contract without a new one would just be stupid.0 -
yes to a new employer you can say the contract ended as it will do but if you are offered a perm role there to the job centre it never ended.koolhoven83 wrote: »Its my CV/future references which concerns me more than the JSA situation. If you think you can "stick the contract out" then you probably don't really hate it there or your "mental state/health" isn't causing you real problems.0 -

Please dont tell me what I feel. I am not going to just quit a job, Im not an idiot!! If I have to stick it out, I will. Ive been through worse in my life.0 -
Your boss has stated that she'd like you to stay on permanently 'if you'd like to'. So tell her you don't want to, you haven't been offered a permanent job there she's just indicated that if you were interested they could make you a role. Tell her you're not looking to stay on permanently and leave when the contract ends.0

Nothing of the sort. All they need to put in the box for reasons for the job ending is "Temporary fixed term contract ended."0
