Fish from Asda

Got some Cod portions in and they were terrible, definitely the worst I, my misses and my mum have ever had. They were from the fresh fish counter, so I thought they'd be OK, but they tasted really watery.
The fishmonger dude put them in brown bags which you can cook the fish in... 2 in 1 bag and one in the other...
2 in the same bag didn't work as it was impossible to separate the fish
I usually go to Morrisons or ideally to the local fresh fish shop, but both are further away than Asda, so I gave it a shot
Is it just our local Asda that sucks?

Sounds like yours as ours don't do paper bags for fish.
I don't buy cod though as it is unsustainable and tastes rubbish anyway.0 -

Asda sell fish that have been frozen and are thawed in store and the texture becomes a bit mushy because of this. Morrisons fish are not frozen and the texture is consequently better.0 -

True, last time I used Asda (1980) I bought pate and cheesecake from the deli and couldn't tell by the taste which one I was eating!

Fresh? counters in ASDA seem to be less than fresh... brought Cheddar, inside 3 days it had white fluffy mould on it, despite being in a very cold fridge. Only buy pre-packed now in ASDA.My Mind wanders, if found please return.0

I try not too (I prefer lemon sole or haddock), but the misses and mother can be a bit parky, although in fairness to them, I'm sure they'd try haddock or lemon sole if I bought some..... and didn't tell them muahahahaha
hopefully they'll change the fishing regs to make it more sustainable than it is at the moment.Asda sell fish that have been frozen and are thawed in store and the texture becomes a bit mushy because of this. Morrisons fish are not frozen and the texture is consequently better.
Yeah that's what I thought, as the fish monger at Asda thought he had no cod portions left, but he found some in the freezer. I also asked to have them pin boned, but he 'didn't have the tools to do it'. TBF, there were no bones in the cod though.
cost me over £6 for three portions toofluffnutter wrote: »Nope. All Asdas suck.
Mine usually isn't too bad, but I do prefer Morrisons.welshbookworm wrote: »True, last time I used Asda (1980) I bought pate and cheesecake from the deli and couldn't tell by the taste which one I was eating!

Yeah, the deli stuff isn't too bad now, aside from the fish of course. Having siad that, Morrison's fresh stuff is far superior.Fresh? counters in ASDA seem to be less than fresh... brought Cheddar, inside 3 days it had white fluffy mould on it, despite being in a very cold fridge. That sounds a little bit minging; I had a similar issue with something recently, believe it was bread from lidl/aldi0 -

Be careful when buying 'fresh' fish from a supermarket a lot of it isn't what most of us would consider fresh and has actually been previously frozen for months or even longer. Look at the signs for the individual fish and in small print it may say something like ' has been previously frozen'.
If you have a proper fishmonger in your town that is normally a better place to go as you can then question them about the province of the fish.'The More I know about people the Better I like my Dog'

Not really anything to do with the fish but I thought it was the silver bags you could cook the fish in? I usually just ask for the normal brown bag as I dont oven cook my fish. Not sure if the bag would make a difference to the cooking process though.Married 30/08/14 :heartpuls0 -

I thought it was odd too, but yep, brown bag with cooking times on the back for oven, grill etc...
I wrapped them in foil...0 -
Actually incorrect cod numbers have greatly increased over the past few years. In fact cod numbers are a lot higher than a lot of fish purple see as more sustainable.

Thanks.
We usually go to the local fresh fish shop as they get all of their stuff directly from the fish quay.. however, Asda was closer so we went there, certainly wont make that mistake again0
