Back up error message

I'm trying to do a back up onto an external hard drive but it keeps failing.

I'm getting the error message 'transient error Ox800423F3'.

Anyone help?

If you click start then run, type services.msc then press enter, wait for the services list. Is Volume Shadow Copy Service started? Left click the entry to check, if not started, click over on the left to start the service.

If that solves it, you can left click the entry, then right click it, click properties and set the start up type to automatic, then click apply, though this is optional but will save having to manually start it whenever you need to run the back up

If you do set the start up type to automatic, the next time you start the machine, check in services to see it has started

Thanks Santer - it wasn't started so I ticked it and did the backup again but got the same message and same error number.

What are you using for the backup ?

Do you mean the location? It's an external hard drive.

No no I got that bit , I meant which software and which version of Windows too, mind you the manufacturer of the external may help, also is it formatted as NTFS or FAT32
