Registry editor for external .reg files...?
Comments
-
it's been a while since i've used Regedit (make that 2 years!!) but think you can open them from within the program.
you might need to use regedit32 instead...
From XP onwards, regedt32.exe just loads regedit.exe.
I just had a quick search and it looks like you would use "load hive" to import the registry hive without overwriting any registry values.
Cool - hopefully that's the problem solved (once I can get the relevant file and create a suitable .reg file).
Thanks all :-)0 -
Argh!!! Foiled again! I've just asked my friend to send me the %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\SOFTWARE file from his PC, but although he can see the file in Windows Explorer, it doesn't appear in the "open file" dialogue when he tries to upload it via YouSendIt.com. The same happens if I try on my PC.
I also tried to zip the file, but get the error "File not found or no read permission". I just tried to make a copy to play with but get the message, "The action can't be completed because the file is open in System // Close the file and try again."
Is there an easy way round this...?0 -
You'd have to do it outside of windows (RC/RE, linux CD etc). Copy it somewhere - desktop for instance - and have them upload that copy.0

I guess it depends on your definition of easy. I'm fairly sure Windows itself has these files open exclusively locked - hence you will always get a sharing violation if you try to copy them.
As recommended way up there ^ have you tried using the reg.exe command?
For example within Windows I've just tried
reg export HKLM\software e:\software.reg
and that seems to export the whole of that part of the registry into a text file on my pendrive without any file errors.
I haven't tried, but I'd guess from there it should be easy to use the reg unload and reg load commands to extract and add from the registry once you know from the exported data what to look for.0 -
