eBay ended auction, 6 hours after it finished!

I won an item this morning at 10am, and paid immediately. I got an email at 4 pm from eBay, telling me they'd ended(!) the auction and I wasn't obliged to proceed with the transaction.

Of course a better time to do this would have been before the auction ended! I've already paid, and the seller has apparently already dispatched!

Am I right in thinking they expect the item to be fake? Have read all the advice and intend to contact the seller when the goods arrive, or on Wednesday if there is no sign of them to ask for a refund.

I'm happy that I have paypal protection, but would like to ask, am I better disputing through eBay or paypal if it comes to it?

Also, what is the legality of sending counterfeit items through the post?

If there's a chance that an item's fake, open the case in ebay. They expect the seller to prove authenticity, whereas paypal put the onus on the buyer to get written proof that it's fake.

I take it you mean paypal put the onus on the BUYER ;)
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.
  • Your other option is to refuse to accept the package when it gets delivered and then open a non received dispute with paypal.
Also, what is the legality of sending counterfeit items through the post
The only time it becomes illegal is if you are importing counterfeit goods into the UK.
A lot of people will say that it's illegal to send fake goods in the post, but there is nothing written in law to state this.

Ive completed many sales after getting this email - it does not mean the items fake at all.

Eg love2shop ask ebay to cancel all sales they see on ebay. Some companies dont like ebayers selling their stuff, or maybe they used a picture without permission.

It can be seen as an excuse by some buyers to make a fuss though.

You might consider it making a fuss, but many others will simply consider it being sensible and asking for advice for something that they are not too sure about.
  • Thanks everyone, think that covers it.

I wasn't referring the op asking a question - i was referring to some buyers who would see it as an opportunity to get their money back and keep the item.

I bet i've had 15+ sales where the sellers listing as been removed. As long as i get what i paid for - i am happy and email the seller to say so. Ebay often end listings and throw people off for no sensible reason. I won't take it out on the seller - unless i am not sent the correct item - and certainly would not assume the seller was dodgey. Ebay are dodgey.
