Vista windows update problem

Our laptop has developed a problem. When you turn it on you get a screen which says "Installing windows update 3 of 3 0%. It then just continues on a loop without ever booting up properly. I've googled the error and there appear to be quite a few posts on various forums about it but I can't find a solution. Does anyone have any ideas? We don't have any boot up disc for the laptop. I've tried re-installing windows but it comes up with a hard drive error message.

You will need to enter System Restore from the Vista Windows Recovery Environment. You'll need a disc in that instance.
Follow these instructions in order to create one:Obtain a blank optical disc. Download and save this Vista Recovery Disc Image to a working computer.
Next, download and install ImgBurn(No need to install the Google Toolbar. Remove the relevant tick). Burn the Image to Disc. Use this guide(skip step 2b)
Follow the instructions exactly and you won't go wrong.0 -

No. It won't boot up in safe mode. I'll have a "Take this" idea when I have more time but it looks similar to a way i've already tried unsuccessfully (my laptop couldn't find any restore points!)0

Then you can run 'chkdsk' and or a system file check via the rescue disc.0

Vista is a pile of cack, and gets worse with age.
Might be worth upgrading to Windows 7, or installing a free operating system.
I don't know much about those, but Linux Mint gets good reviews:
