I was going to download the avg virus software on my pc, as I have heard it's as good as norton for virus protection - and it's free!

Personally I use the avast virus product which is also free to home users and has more features than the AVG product.
In particular it uses push technology to update the virus database at regular intervals, where as AVG checks when you start up the machine or do a manual update.
My avast updated itself 3 times within a few hours last week when a new virus came out.
It works pretty much the same as AVG and both products use so much less system resources than any of the synmantec or mcafee products.
There is no excuse not to have virus protection especially when you get great products for free.0
