Gas Cost - British Gas - is this excessive?

Options
Hi everyone and thanks in advance for your help!

We have a 2 bed bungalow (not too big either!) and are currently supplied by British Gas for Gas and Electric.

Up until the cooler weather set in, we were putting £20 a month gas and £30 electric on our PAYG meter and this was fine (in fact we had electric left over and gas lasted till we topped up again - have never used emergency credit either or got a debt!)

I know prices have increased recently for British Gas and I have switched my heating on a bit now (so now have added £10 extra to gas)

I have it all on timer for 8hrs a day (4hrs in the morning and 4 in the evening) but we topped up the £30 gas (with the extra £10) and this has lasted exactly 12 days (so costing £2.50 a day) so we aren't even getting halfway through the month on £30 now!

So currently, it's looking like it might end up costing us £70 a month for gas alone for winter - is this excessive (baring in mind we aren't home a lot so hence the timer) ?

I know that gas/elec is cheaper when done by DD but up till recently, it's been the best form of payment as I wasn't working so didn't want any suprise bills so can probably go onto a billed account now.

Are there any suppliers that do monthly payments on gas/elec? I know most like quarterly billing.....

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated :)

No it's not excessive with the heating on 8 hours per day.
All suppliers offer fixed monthly DD billing-the cheapest tariffs usually require this method of payment (not quarterly billing).
If you tell us what your actual kWh consumption is, then more advice can be given-£ costs are fairly meaningless.
Bear in mind that you may be charged to switch from PPM's to credit meters, or they may require a first year deposit.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • £2.50 per day could well be what to expect, even more when it starts freezing.
To give you some idea, with my credit meter for the last week, which has been the coldest this winter so far, I have used £13.50 worth of gas.
In the depths of last winter I was using more than £25 each week. I have a 3 bed bungalow.
