checking on gift aid rules please

I do understand the basic rules of gift aid, but can't seem to find the answer to a picky little question that may affect a small local charity.
This is a fairly common scenario:
Wife on small pension, does not pay tax, therefore unable to tick the "reclaim gift aid" box if she makes donations in her own name. Husband does pay tax and can therefore gift aid.
If this couple have a joint account, and make donations jointly from it, can they "gift aid" or does the donation theoretically have to be from one or the other?
I ask because it is often the wives who attend the meetings, get the purses or cheque books out etc.
