Broken Electric Meter
Got a wee bit o a problem and hope someone can advise.
Just got a letter from scottish hydro looking for a meter reading. I have not put in a meter reading for prob the last 7 months so i thought it was about time to get it sorted out.
when i went to look at it the digital display was blank....... I dont know how long this has been for since i have just been paying the estimated bills but am kinda concerned as i have no idea how much electricity i have used and most likely neither do the electric company.
I will contact the electric company tommorow but what is the procedure for this? Has anyone had this happen to them before?

Look at you las estimated bill, add on a bit, slightly less than the last estimate and give them that reading..
Than a couple of weeks later report the fault with your meter. Othrwise they will screw you.The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

Don`t try falsifying readings, it will not help the situation. If your readings up to the fault appearing were actual readings then the estimates will be pretty acurate. If the readings before were estimates then your estimates could all be way out. The faulty meter is Hydro Electrics property & therefore their problem. If the you are not happy with their estimate at the meter change dispute it & if they don`t come up with a bill that you think is correct, threaten to go to energywatch.0

Some electonic meters pulse through a sequence,it is possible that you looked at your meter during a sequence change, hence the blank screen.0

I had an old clockwork meter, and just before Christmas 2005 it stopped clocking up units - it was completely stuck. I didn't actually notice this until the end of January when I went to input my meter reading online, so I gave them a call with the reading (which was only +10 units from the last reading in Early December), and advised that the meter wasn't clocking up units.
They sent someone round a month later to change the meter, so I wrote to them advising what I thought the reading should have been when the old meter was removed (nice big spreadsheet showing readings, average usage etc), and they wrote back saying don't worry about it... we're not going to charge you from when it stopped until it was changed.
~£50 of free electricity.... thanks very much!!!
Now I have a nice new digital model.43580
