Decent Homes Issue?

Friend lives with his family in a council flat, and his block with number of flats was successful in decent homes program. The council have external contractors, whom have worked with the council for number of years.

Recently, friend’s bathroom is due for a replacement, and contractors have started taking out the old stuff and moving in the new things. The whole process should take about two weeks. Friend had a letter jointly from council and contractors indicating the time of two weeks, before the process started.

Unfortunately, the contractors have not turned up after a week (company issue), and which means friend’s bathroom is not complete and his personal things are not in the bathroom. Due to his skin disorder and his small child of 1 year and rest of family can not use the bathroom as normal.

As this problem just started, what are his rights, and what can he do in order to get the bathroom completed.

Thanks for your valuable suggestions,

I suggest he contact the council and ask when the work will re-commence and finish.
  • We had work done under Decent Homes scheme. It was supposed to take 2 weeks.., it took six. We were having a new kitchen and bathroom which were wonderful when done but with an under two, it wasn't a lot of fun during.

We were actually advised to move out and I did manage it for two weeks but came back and the work was half done. We only had one cold water tap for ages, a half assembled kitchen etc etc I had to go elsewhere to bath.

There was nothing I could do. I did complain but the work just took as long as it took, I'm afraid. As I said, it was great when it was done.

Thanks, for your answer, but I do believe one can't complain after some time. Landlord can't just sit there and do nothing?
  • In the documentation your friends received I think you will most likely find that they have provided an ESTIMATE of the time it will take to complete the works.

Your friends should get in touch with the landlord and see if they can find out the reason(s) for the delay.
