When can I ask for a refund??

Hi all,

I purchased an HP netbook for my mother back in July which had to be sent back last week because of dust in the cooling system believe it or not.

Now the machine has been used less than 4 or 5 times and has been covered up in it's own neoprene sleeve when not in use.

Had a look online and it seems to be a regular problem with these machines. Also, its a huge inconvenience sending the machine back and forward i.e. waiting in all day for couriers etc.

I want to know at what point I'm within my rights to ask for a full refund. I was under impression that you had to give company the opportunity to repair the machine and then you could demand a refund.

Can anybody shed any light on the subject.

p.s. bought the item through ebay so I will open a dispute if things get ugly with retailer.

Many thanks for thoughts shared.

No chance of that I'm afraid as you only have 45 days from payment to open a dispute.

All that the SOGA states is that the retailer must repair, refund or exchange and it's their choice as to the option providing that the consumer isn't inconvienienced too much.
Have you asked the retailer how long they expect the repair to take?
  • To be honest you can request a refund anytime...but you aint gonna get it it on most occassions.
  • You're also going to struggle getting a refund for dust in the cooling system. Netbooks don't come supplied with their own selection of dust so it has to come from somewhere and you'll never convince anybody that it it was an existing fault.
