newbie needs advice on ppi

hi all just new to here today and hoping for some help and advice. back in 2001 i took out a mortgage with the yorkshire building society and was told that i needed insurance to cover incase of job loss or sickness and was told we couldnt proceed with the mortgage unless we had this cover but that we didnt have to take it up with who they dealt with but would need proof of the insurance before they would proceed with the mortgage, we took the insurance with the company they dealt with which was legal and general am not sure if this is ppi or not that everyone is talking about and wether i have a claim or not, we also 4 years ago borrowed extra on our mortgage to build an extension and had to take out extra insurance to cover this amount aswell. ive heard of lots of people reclaiming ppi but am not sure if this counts as ppi on my mortgage any help would be greatly appreciated

That is good. That is exactly how it should be.

You havent given any grounds for mis-sale.

What are your grounds for complaint?
What evidence do you have to support your complaint?

  • Simply having PPI does not mean it was missold. Nothing you have said indicates that it was either.
  • hi maggie thanks for your reply so the insurance i have on my mortgage is classed as ppi? Also is ppi compulsory when taking out a mortgage which is what i was told by the mortgage company?

so the insurance i have on my mortgage is classed as ppi?

It may be. Legal & General have a PPI policy. However, they also have a PHI, life assurance and critical illness policy as well as home insurance.

Sometimes yes. Not so much nowadays. Indeed, it is rare nowadays but in the past it was often required to get a certain mortgage deal. When insurance is insisted on nowadays it is more common for lenders to insist on life assurance. All of which is allowed.

Being "told" something and proving it are very different, the op may have a job proving this.
