Moving Into new Place tom 12/11 advice needed for Gas & Electricity

Hi Everyone,
I am moving into a new flat tomorrow and was wondering if you could let me know how to find out the best possible deal for gas & electricity.
The current tenants moved out 2 weeks ago and letting agency informed me that they will be writing to Gas & Electric Company to pass my details.
What my concern is how will I know that I am on the right tariff? What I don't want is huge bill in few months time and wanted do everything I can beforehand.
I do hope someone can point me towards the right direction.
