Why do you all write A*da, Tesc* etc?

Okay.... I have been puzzling over this for ages! I can never figure out why everyone does this. I mean, we can all decipher it within a second, so why bother?

My theory is...... if the big supermarkets are trying to find the glitches themselves to stop us getting them, do they maybe Google their store and location and see if it is being mentioned?

Is that why everyone does it? I never had, cos I couldn't figure out why. I am happy to start if it means more bargains for us!

  • I think it's so Tesc* and Asd* etc don't get the free advertising! Like they need it!
  • im so glad you have asked this :D

i was thinking this since before i joined up, but didnt wanna look like i was asking a strange question :)

i always thought it was because they were "watching" and would sue moneysavingexpert and our posts would be used as evidence :P

    i have a vivid imagination :):):D
  • It also stops the threads coming up on internet searches eg if someone typed in As*a, it would bring up all the posts where it was mentioned as search engines often bring up results by the newest thing added to the net. HTH

So, I was sort of thinking along the right lines.......eventually! I had been wondering for years, and just sort of 'clicked' a couple of weeks ago that this could be the reason.

I've always wondered about this as well.

I've never typed a$da instead of asda. Is it better to do so?

I'm supposing that it depends on the post. For example, from now on, if i am just posting about where to buy the toothpaste that someone was asking about, I would just put Asda as normal.
If I am talking about a 'glitch', or a bargain that is only for MSE'ers or like-minded, then I am going to use A*da or whatever.
I think That is the idea.

I think if we are lucky enough to get glitches that's great, I wouldn't begrudge them to anyone else. Often people post links to deals on here that they found on HDUK, share and share alike... more for everyone etc etc

Sorry, you got me wrong! What I was talking about was perhaps managers from the likes of the big supermarkets who probably do look on sites like this, find the glitches and fix them!!! I tell everyone who will listen, about this site, especially OS forum, and every bargain I can find out about:D

It really annoys me, so what if it comes up in a search. It is clique and IMHO a bit smug, I feel like I am back in the playground.

I hate the term hubby, too! It feels like I am back in the 1950's!

If you are trying to hide things from the supermarkets etc. I think they are quite aware of abbreviations that will be used by forums and will no doubt search with wildcards.

"Trouts". I really hate that term. A lot of the time the so called "Trout" is only doing what the management has told them to do.

I've noticed a thread on 1p finds in Tescos and whilst at CS one day saw a notice behind the desk telling the staff that they're not allowed to let the 1p items through, yet if someone tries to buy the 1p items and gets told by the member of staff that they can't sell it to them, they come on here moaning that the "Trout" wouldn't sell it to them.

As somebody who used to work on checkouts, it really gets my goat that an innocent person is being called a derogatory name simply because they're following orders from management.
