Homelet guarantor frustration

Well, this one is making my blood boil!
Does anyone have any experience with trying to arrange a letting guarantor through Homelet?
Here's my situation in a (rather big) nutshell:
I am self-employed and do my own accounts. Although my first year of trading was 04/05, that was only for a few months so that doesn't reflect my current earnings. My first full freelance year has just been filed with the inland revenue online.
So, really - I can't properly prove my income at the moment.
But, that hasn't been a problem with the previous two letting reference agencies I have used (MARAS and Letsure). All I needed to do was supply a guarantor. No problem.
However, my estate agent gets back to me last week and says I have been declined. "No problem," I say. "Just get them to process the guarantor forms".
"Sorry," says the agent. "They won't process the guarantor unless you have been approved yourself."
Well, after twenty minutes of explaining the ridiculous catch 22 of this situation, I said that I would file my tax and send the SA return to Homelet.
Few days later they tell me that this isn't sufficient proof. Fair enough. So, I phone Homelet to ask what's going on. They say that they can't discuss my situation. "What!" I say. "They're my details! I sent them to you"
"No can do," says the operator. She won't even tell me what their policy is on guarantoring. "Data protection, you understand". She says the only stuff I can find out is through the letting agent.
So, I phone the agents back. They tell me no more than I knew before: i.e Homelet declined me and won't process my guarantor for that reason.
So, basically - I can't find out any more about why I was declined and I can't ask them why they won't process my guarantor forms.
Now, my (increasingly swine-ish) letting agents are demanding that I either supply six month's rent by Thursday or forfeit my deposit.
Gah!
So, what the heck? Does anyone have any suggestions or know what Homelet's policy is on Guarantors? Am I being taken for a ride by my letting agents? To me this whole thing seems totally stupid, but I can't find anyone with which to properly discuss the situation.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
