    could you clarify the figures

    you have 1GB ram installed?

    commit charge peak is 228300

and it still takes over 3 minutes to boot?

you could disable the talk talk services using services.msc, and re-enable them inf future if you need them, then they aren't running all the time.

    This time its 165m/23,
    Total 172652
    Peak 198336

and yes its still taking over 3mins from when I press the button and it beeps to when I can actually use it.
at 55 secs the home screen shows, at 150 secs the box saying 'your comp can be at risk as no f/wall is on', the about 190 I can get on the internet.

still seems a while, what processor have you got ??

have you fixed your virtual memory (pagefile) or are you letting windows manage it??

SeaPort (search enhancement pack) you disable from start > run > services.msc
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

    In System Info it says
    Processor -x86 Family 6 model 7 stepping 1 Authentic AMD 1300mhz
    XP O/S

I presume i'm letting Windows manage virtual memory (page file)

    Ok, have disabled SeaPort

this is a really old, slow processor (thought my Semperon 3000+ was slow these days ;) ) but that is REALLY slow, a Duron I suspect. Download CPU-z and run it for a definite ID on that processor.

You're probably not far off optimised as much as you can speed-wise with that processor :(

165m/23 - what is the meaning of the second figure after the slash? have you missed some numbers off the end?

It should still boot and be on the web in less than a minute, something is amiss.

    try

disable this from startup using msconfig

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ArcSoft Connection Service] C:\Program Files\Common Files\ArcSoft\Connection Service\Bin\ACDaemon.exe

Disable error reporting (but leave notify me when critical errors occur ticked), in control panel, system, advanced error reporting

start, run, services.msc, disable these services
    SSDP Discovery Service
    Remote Registry
    WebClient
    Distributed Link Tracking Client
    O23 - Service: SupportSoft Sprocket Service (TalkTalk) (sprtsvc_TalkTalk) - SupportSoft, Inc. - C:\Program Files\TalkTalk\bin\sprtsvc.exe
    O23 - Service: SupportSoft RemoteAssist - SupportSoft, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Supportsoft\bin\ssrc.exe
    O23 - Service: SupportSoft Repair Service (TalkTalk) (tgsrvc_TalkTalk) - SupportSoft, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Supportsoft\bin\tgsrvc.exe

    then

    chkdsk c: /F

which will check the hard disk out after a boot

try IE instead of firefox, also run windows update as IE is out of date

do you have any "windows live" entries in add/remove programs - if you don't use them, you could uninstall this

what are you connection settings in IE and firefox, do you have any firefox addins installed?

Yep, thats the one, AMD Duron 1gb RAM. I have had it about 6/7 years I think, maybe longer !.

If there is anything else ( other than get a new one !) that I can do, I am still keen to keep trying.

I think the poor old girl is definitely working better, quite a bit more responsive and the screen saver doesnt freeze anymore and it also turns off almost as soon as you press the shut down comp button where as before it took ages. So all in all, I think this has all been beneficial, so Thank You Closed, Gunjack & rmg1 for persevering with me and giving me the help to at least make the poor old girl as good as she can be.Its really appreciated.

post another log, commit charge, and boot timings

If it's still taking more than one minute to boot, a windows reinstall would probably cure it.
