connection problem

Hi please be nice as im not very technical! Im posting on behalf of my son, he is having problems with his acer laptop connection to our bt broadband. Sometimes it disconnects randomly and comes up with a little yellow alert sign over the internet status he tries to troubleshoot the problem but it says the DNS server isnt responding. When this happens he cannot connect to any web pages or anything internet related can anyone help with a solution to this, thanks for your time.

Is this a wireless or wired connection to the bt broadband box? If wireless then 1. check a wired connection works 2. how far away is the Acer from the box (any walls between?).

Also try switching DNS provider and bypass the router. What OS / Version of Windows are you running?

Also, is the router near a DEC phone?

I had this trouble and could not work out why the router and computer were intermittently dropping their connections.

It turned out that when the handheld receiver of the phone was away from the base unit and they contacted each other, it interfered with the signal from the router to the computer. They were both using the same channel.

The cure for this is preferably to change the channel that one of them uses - this can easily be done on the router from the setup page and usually is easily done on the phone (if you still have the instructions!)

Alternatively, move the phone base unit to another position, well away from the router.
