Laptop/Netbook help please :)

Hiya

I'm not very techie minded, as you'll soon see lol My daughter started secondary school in September and has since plagued me with requests for a laptop. She has been using my desktop for homework, which is fine but I would really like to get her her own laptop for Christmas as I work online and there's not always the time for her to use my pc. My problem is that I'm confused between all the laptops/netbooks out there! Also, I have limited funds. I could go to £270 max really. Obviously the netbooks are cheaper, is this for good reason? Would a netbook do the job that she needs it for? It is only really going to be used for going on normal 'tween' websites and for homework, mainly Word as alot of her homework is sent through the schools website. Would appreciate being pointed in the right direction please :o

Thanks x

£270 will easily cover a usable laptop. Don't waste your money on a Netbook.

    Example: Toshiba Satellite C660D-1C6 £260

Netbooks are great if you don't mind losing out on performance and effectively paying a premium for their small size. But if price and value-for-money are more important than portability and a longer-lasting battery, I'd go for a laptop instead.

For the same money the laptop will be faster and have a CD/DVD drive. And it will probably be easier to type on too.

if she is gonna be multi-tasking too then the screen size/resolution of a netbook could be an impediment.

Not the fastest machine ever, but pretty impressive for £260! The PC Mark Vantage benchmark suggests that it will be about 78% faster than a single-core Intel Atom N450 (as commonly found on netbooks - although most netbooks have dual-core CPUs now):
