I have an Acer 4810, prob 3 years old and for the last 2 I've used it on the mains as the battery was FU (prob because I didn't run it down and recharge enough).
Always had a blue power light on at the front when I powered on, but this morning I've got a flashing organge light like a blooming crossing beacon, and no blue light. Hovering over the power do-dah tells me that no battery is connected, and it certainly won't power up when not plumbed into the mains lead.
Should I shut it down and remove the battery? Or could that lead to it not recognising it's plumbed into the mains lead?
Any help you can offer on this will be very gratefully received.

Try removing the battery and connecting the power adaptor - some laptops will power up like that and some won't.
What's probably happened is that the battery has deteriorated so much that it's dragging down the adaptor's voltage too much and the safety cutout is actuating.0 -
