Home Emergency Cover

Hi,

I need some advise regarding home emergency cover. I am currently with Homeserve and they have offered me another year at £19.05 per month. It seems to cover everything upto £4000 per claim. I cant seem to work out if it covers boiler repairs etc.

I know £19.05 doesnt seem much, but I am trying to 'weed' out any additional insurances I dont need and rather put it towards credit card debt.

I dont have a stash of cash for a rainy day so not sure if I should continue with it.

My home is only 6 years old so everything is fairly new and this year had a blocked toilet and tried to make a claim but there was a £50 excess so managed to fit it myself.

The company used a couple of scare tactics e.g burst pipes in the garden and complete electrical failure etc. I have read the policy and it seems there are more exclusions than inclusions.

Any advise or alternative suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

p.s. I do have comprehensive home insurance with contents so would any of this cover such situations. Sorry still a little naive about all these things as I was never in charge of the household finances.

Some Home Insurance policies do include an optional extra to cover for home emergencies. The problem is that if you make a claim on this optional cover, it goes on your home insurance record as a "claim" and your premiums increase as a result and you have to declare the claim to future home insurers. There has been a story on MSE where a home insurance policy was cancelled because the home owner claimed too many times on the emergency cover option. So, an individual policy could be better to avoid the above.

Thanks. I would probably do a seperate policy. I guess the bottom line is - should I have home emergency cover e.g. like the new AA ad, or is it not worth it.

I am trying to work out whether it is best to pay for an insurance in case of or pay off debt and start to save for a rainy day.

(I know how long is a piece of string :))

The AA state clearly in their t&c;s tht the emergency cover guarantees a temporary repair.... a permanent may be done, only if at simial cost, and can be done on 1st attendance.
Promo codes are never always cheaper..... isnt that right EuropCar?
