Can u get a mobile phone contract on Jobseekers?

I'm sorry if this is the wrong thread to post this in...

But I was wondering if a person on Jobseekers allowance can get a mobile phone contract? My mate said i couldn't as I would have a credit check and wouldn't get a contract.

That true?

My sister has and she is at Uni but yes ... she ain't on Jobseekers but she gets a loan so...?

Thx people x:money:

You're on JSA and have enough spare cash to spend £20-£30 a month on a new phone?

You're either amazing at budgeting, have all your finances in order, a job on the horizon, savings tucked away for a rainy day.... or you really are rather stupid.

A little bit harsh, don't you think? If someone is out looking for work it is good to have a mobile phone so potential employers can get in touch.

Sorry OP I'm genuinely not sure. There are some pretty good payg deals out there so perhaps you're better off going down that route if you're not sure. Most phone companies will have a cheap line of phones and something around £20-30 for payg will keep you going until you can sort something else out. Otherwise ask the phone provider directly, they may be lenient.

    EDIT

One more thing. Have you had a contract before? If you are upgrading then you will probably be ok
  • at risk of destroying my normal agenda for !!!!!ing at people on JSA, you can get a contract mobile for about a tenner (less than bt line rental) and you do really need a phone to get a job.

in response to the OP i don't know if you can secure the contract but you can buy a phone from tesco for 10 quid with a free PAYG sim card or try to get a sim only contract which for a tenner you can get a really good deal..

As they wont have a phone tied against it i presume they'll probably be easier to attain.

I'm in the process of swapping my 38 quid a month o2 contract for a tesco mobile sim only contact (over 12 months) which has the same minutes and texts (5000text and 500 minutes)

Yes, possibly a little harsh. Your suggestion of a PAYG was far more appropriate than entering into a 24 month contract. It's rather naive to think the OP wants it to keep in touch with employers - she wants a new phone cos her sister has one!

I find contract phones are much better value and the added advantage that you never run out of credit so can call back potential employers whenever

I have a £10 a month contract phone (12 month deal - Tesco), so even someone on JSA can afford that - its cheaper than a landline

Also - I may be wrong but I think there is a £1 contract out there somewhere if you search

when I lost my job I cancelled my fixed 30 day contract and went to pay as you go but since I am at home doing my job searches people either email me and I call them back or they call me on the home phone. I have a BT line where I pay for broadband and inclusive calls.

I only have a few £ on my phone and sometimes nothing so can only answer calls with no voicemail as I have to pay for that too and can't afford it now.

This is a question that should be asked of the phone companies.

I have a contract mobile from VM and the only check made when I took the contract out was a credit check which I passed despite being BR 1 year previous. SIM only deals are out there for £10 with generous minutes/text/data packages.
