Overdraft Protection - Barclays

Options
I've had an account for about 2 years that I use for my rent. It has an 800 o/d on it, it goes od every month and then paid off each month. A few weeks ago I had my husband's name added onto the account so he could pay in cheques also. A few days later I noticed that o/d protection had been added. I phoned and asked for it to be removed and said that we hadn't asked for it to be added. I was told we would both have to go into the branch to have it removed. I explained neither of us had authorised for it to be added in the first place. Anyway after about half an hour of getting nowhere I was put through to someone else who said it had been applied in error and it would be removed and I'd receive a letter of apology - that was on the 12th of January - and so far neither of these things has happened. I wrote a letter on the 16th - but still nothing!
Are they legally (?) allowed to do this? If they think I need o/d protection can they just apply it?

i would g into the branch , explain your situation and the distress this has caused , and you want a refund for the protection, because you will get charged.
