Which router is best? Netgear or Belkin....

Options
Hi,

I am looking for an ADSL wireless router/modem for my Tiscali Broadband. There are mixed opinions on the Belkin and Netgear routers. The netgear does seem to be cheaper, but do you get what you pay for?! Also, how different are the 54mpbs and the 108 mbps?

Any advice would be great, thanks.:D

Never had any problems with my netgear wireless, had it for years. 54 mbps and 108 mbps makes no difference to internet speed if that's what you're asking.

I tend to go Linksys which are a part of the Cisco group
  • Not too sure what the 54mbps means?? What does it make quicker?

Either should work, Belkin has a lifetime warranty, but their website is a bit naff. My preference is for Netgear.

You don't need 108, 54 is fine, just make sure it is an adsl model (e..g. dg834G), not cable/dsl
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

It's the speed of the wireless connection which has no bearing on your internet speed since your internet speed is only likely to be 16 mbps at most. It only really comes into play when transferring files between the networked pcs.

My preferance is anything other than netgear, constant dodgy firmware a few years ago stopping access to secure websites just put me off for life.

Belkin have been ok, my wireless access point is belkin, dlink are ok range is limited but not to bad. linksys aer great but can be expensive. I've played with the BT voyager routers as well and for the price they are ok. £45 in pc world with a wireless usb or pcmcia adaptor.
  • I have a belkin which has been okay, but I do now and again have periods where the connection keeps dropping. If I was to replace it I would try someting different.

I had a belkin wireless router but it kept dropping the signal to my laptop so I got a belkin instead and this worked correctly. I can't say that a belkin is better just from this one experience as there are lots of variables to consider such as model, environment and maybe the router was a faulty one but my belkin does work and as albatross has mentioned they do have a lifetime warranty. They also have a freephone 24 hour support which can be a lifesaver when you are experiencing trouble in the dead of night in a bank holiday. I had cause to use them once and eventually got my problem sorted out even though it turned out that the fault was with my pc network settings and not the router itself. The support was overseas but they moved heaven and earth to fix the problem and as a result have fully won me over.

Netgear DG834G has served me well for two years so far - when it dies it will be another Netgear for me. So far no sign of that though. Easy to configure and easy to update the firmware (that is important IMHO)
  • I have installed all three makes and always pick Linksys or Netgear. Belkin is ik in that I havent had many problems , but the software for configuring isnt that straight forward.

I find D Link to be to unreliable.
