Postal Order Charges

I enquired about buying a £45 postal order yesterday at my local post office and was shocked at the cost. They want £5.65 extra for the cost of processing fees.

Is it just me or is this a bit extreme?:(

Yes but people pay them so they will carry on charging for them, alternatives are credit/debit card cheque or online banking transfer
  • I had the same - I was required by the DVLA to send them either a cheque or postal order. I don't have a cheque book so the alternative was a postal order. I couldnt believe i was expected to pay (£3-4, although i cant remember the exact amount)! I thought that was disgusting. Then to top it off, the post office didn't sell single envelopes!! Excellent service from the Royal Mail - didn't leave a bitter taste in my mouth at all! =)

well you could always get a bankers cheque from your bank which i think works out cheaper than a large amount postal order
  • I've just had this too yesterday.

Needed to send a cheque or postal order. Don't have a cheque book so went to my bank to be told it would be £30 for them to do a cheque for me! Charges on a £95 postal order were £11 odd which I didn't agree with but it was the lesser of the 2 evils.

It was nothing at all to do with Royal Mail as they are an entirely separate business to the Post Office.

We all take free personal banking services for granted. Atleast with banks though they use your money to lend to borrowers and generate revenue that way. The post office works alot differently and is effective just holding the money until the receipient collects or cashes is (depending on whether you get it marked or not).

The fees are on the PO website
    Prices
    Purchase value per order
    Fee payable
    £0 - £4.99
    50p
    £5 - £9.99
    £1.00
    £10.00 - £99.99 12.50% of the face value
    £100 - to maximum value of £250
    Capped at £12.50

Whoops, I didn't realise that! I guess my issue is with the Post Office then:money:
