Need dentist to help (wisdom teeth)

My wisdom teeth have made a right mess of my other teeth - the front ones have overlapped top and bottom.

What age did it happen at? I feel its going to happen to me.
The consultant at the hospital said that the wisdom teeth might not even grow in? Is this possible, that they NEVER emerge fully? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Yes, it happens quite often, in 35% of people according to the first result on Google:berbastrike wrote: »The consultant at the hospital said that the wisdom teeth might not even grow in? Is this possible, that they NEVER emerge fully?

The process that moves the teeth forwards and gradually crowds them is called mesial drift.
It happens to some extent in nearly everybody, regardless of where their wisdom teeth are, or even if they have wisdom teeth or not.
There is a video about it here http://checkdent.com/en/videos/mesial-drift-120.html or you can google 'mesial drift' to find out more.
Wisdom teeth run the full spectrum of possibilities. Many people have one, more, or all of them missing (We're evolving out of them!) sometimes they stay below gum level and don't come through (with no problems whatsoever) sometimes they give a lot of trouble (that's when they get taken out) sometimes they come through and are useful teeth.
The reason that they 'feel' to be moving your teeth is simply because if you get a bit of inflammation around the gum of the wisdom tooth, there feels to be quite a bit of pressure. In truth though, this pressure has no direction and so does not move any teeth. If it did put pressure between the teeth, it would more likely have the effect of pushing the one wisdom tooth backwards rather than pushing 7 well anchored teeth forwards. The engineering principals of anchorage work just the same in the mouth. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
Mine are that bad that I feel uncomfortable when I close my mouth - I have to chew on just one side because it just doesn't feel right.
But what really miffs me off is that I very rarely smile because I'm conscious of them looking horrid.
Oh well...such is life.Stone walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage.0
