Smeg appliances problems

Options
A bit of a long one this.

In January of this year I bought three Smeg appliances, Linear Hood KTS75C, Linear Touch Control Pyrolytic Oven SCP115 and the Gas on Glass Hob PVS750 at over £2000 for the three items. The first issue I had was the full glass hob exploded whilst my wife was cooking. It took over a week for the engineer to come out to see the hob who then had to order the part which would not get booked in till the end of the week and which took 4 weeks to arrive, yes a month, as it had to come from Italy. When I found this out I insisted that the hob be replaced as my wife needed the hob to cook for our two young children, Smeg not interested in that option.
A week after the hob was fixed the Oven inner glass door, part of the tripple glazing system, exploded whilst the Pyrolytic clean cycle was used for the first time. Rang Smeg and guess what, the same issue, a week for the engineer, a four week wait but get this, the wrong part was ordered so had another 4 week wait for the right one to arrive. Again rang Smeg for a replacement and again not interested in that solution.

Allthough all issues have been rectified it has now come to my attention that all 5 control knobs for the hob have cracked and Smeg will send an engineer out to check them, as this is cosmetic if the engineer thinks we have damaged them ourselves I will be charged for the call out. I find this a disgusting service as for the amount I have paid for the appliances and the issues in the past surely they could just order me new ones. I suppose I will just have to wait 4 weeks for them to arrive.

After all that what I'm asking is if anyone else has had any issues with these items as Smeg are denying any manufacturing problems.

PS the hood seems to be holding up ok.

At the risk of generalising, as soon as I realised Smeg were, in fact, an Italian brand, I immediately removed them from my shortlist of appliance suppliers for my kitchen.

From your experience, it looks like that may have been a wise decision.
  • Why should Smeg pay for them if you have damaged them? Ultimately they are within their rights to ensure that you are not trying to pull a fast one! If they find that they were unfit due to them I am sure they will replace free of charge.

As I am sure you have read on the net that spontaneous shattering of safety glass is not all that uncommon, it does appear that the examples that you read about do tend to feature SMEG quite often!

Unfortunately this experience is typical of Smeg. It doesn't surprise me in the slightest. Unfortunately in my experience AEG/Electrolux aren't that much better nor are the likes of Hotpoint/Indesit etc.

Someone was criticising BSH service yesterday on the forums and one really need to experience Smeg service standards to realise just how good BSH/Miele are.

Smeg are an Italian brand - true

Smeg appliances are made in Italy - false

They are mainly made in Turkey and are, to be honest, pretty poor quality. Their customer service is actually worse than their quality, which is why I ditched using them after less than a year..

As for your problems. Outer glass has been known to shatter on pretty much ANY appliance brand, it's all due to the nature of glass and the stresses/strains it has to put up with. But at least they (eventually) replaced it for you.

The inner glass smashing was probably due to the glass not being cleaned before the pyro-function being used. Yes, that's right, you need to clean the glass before you use the self-cleaning function, otherwise it creates a soft spot for the glass (all due to the temperature the glass gets up to when food residue/dirt is on the glass) but again they replaced it (eventually)

As for the controls being faulty...quite possibly due to the fact they use lower quality materials than you probably expect for the price you've paid for the appliance. Smeg appliances look pretty, but aren't exactly what you would call decent.

(You should have seen the amount of problems I had with their retro fridges, looked great on the outside, inside they were full of cheap plastic that eventually either snapped or crumbled)
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

    Hi

Could I ask you why did you choose these Smeg appliances?

    Did someone recommend them?

    Thanks

    CK
  • I had got a recommendation for a different model but the clean looks of the linear looked really nice and I thought Smeg were a good brand, oh and the wife liked them. I new I should have went with Siemens lol. And to the previous reply, we have'nt damaged the knobs, they have cracked on there own.

OK, but who recommended Smeg to you? Was it your kitchen designer or appliance expert? Or was it just a friend?

Not that I can help with your problems, I am just curious as to the qualifications of the person that recommend Smeg appliances to you.

And yes, if you had to choice of Smeg or Siemens you definitely went the wrong way!

  • I would imagine like many - people get attracted by looks rather than actual boring stuff, like reliability and safety. Not a dig at OP, just seems to be the norm these days.
Smeg are one of the worst style over substance cuplrits from what I can see as well. A quick trawl of internet would show that they don't exactly come highly recommneded in general, although Meepster's post is interesting about cleaning glass first
  • Hi, (fuming) i have a smeg pyro self cleaning oven which last week the inner glass exploded on the cleaning cycle, it was lucky at the time that my 8 year old daughter who was looking in the fridge at the time (smeg fridge as well) had her back to the oven when it exploded, spoke to smeg customer services and they said there was nothing they could do as the appliance was out of warranty(2 years old) , i was even told they know they can explode, how can they get away with producing something they know and will explode, i then asked if i bought a new oven and after 12 months warranty the oven glass exploded would i be covered, the answer was NO, i have a smeg hob, smeg fridge , smeg microwave and the oven and find there customer services approach absolutely disgusting, on searching this matter on the internet i found that this was a common fault on the smeg pyro self cleaning oven, something needs to be done about this matter.Perhaps martin lewis could look into this matter.
