I think the rules are already flexible by allowing 30 hours week rather than the normal 37.5 full time hours. That means that you can still claim tax credits whilst having a day off a week. I personally would say that unless you work full time, you shouldn't be entitled to anything. These benefits should go to those who work full-time but don't earn much. Oh and that should be the rule from the time the children are in secondary school and can look after themselves.

    Hi

You won't be entitled to tax credits, but you should be entitled to help with rent and possibly council tax. Obviously the amount you get will depend on your income. The Turn2us link above will help you work out what you might get. Good luck with the job search!

Are you sure you won't owe some tax credits back? If your son started university in September you wouldn't be entitled to tax credits after end of August.
  • Thankyou "karent" for your reply, not too sure if i'll owe tax credits back, he started uni end of September and was 20 couple of weeks later, thanks for your encouragment
