Thanks for all your replies. My original post was a bit tongue in cheek to try and point out that being a student didnt mean you naturally ended up in a lot of debt for years to come. It all depends on your own restraints and keeping a rein on the finances. It was my daughters suggestion to have all living accomodation/bills/food in one payment to save the students she has seen over the last 3 years from struggling and ending up with large debts, which then causes worry, which leads to poor studies. Her 2 house mates are now struggling to find money to pay the bills such as gas/electric and will be unlikey to have any money this side of Christmas. As one member said earlier - they are there to study - not just to have a good time. Yes it does give them the freedom and experience in life, but if they can be steered in the right direction, then it can only be helpful. We have at least 5 years of resession/austerity ahead of us, perhaps if some of our politicians had been more careful with their money when at uni, - they might have been a bit more careful with our money when in government ! Oh and yes - I am proud of my daughter, she hasnt done anything out of the ordinary, just showed a bit of common sense, thats all.

i wonder if this doesnt mean that your daughter shouldnt be receiving a grant (paid for by the taxpayers!). she obviously doesnt need it. perhaps you should have some empathy for students who dont receive a grant because their parents work hard, but their parents cant afford to make up the excess 'free money' that students like your daughter get. instead they get forced to take on higher loans because they have the misfortune of somewhat successful parents.
