I know it probably doesn't seem as exciting as wrapping a big present up for him, but how about wrapping up some good old fashioned money?

You've said he's mature, so he might really like the idea of deciding what he wants to spend it on.....or might shock the pants off you, and say he wants to save it for a rainy day.

  • I've been stumped with my 3 (18, 12 1/2, 10) this year too, loosing my job in Sept didn't help - but I decided I was better off setting a cost limit each and getting a box each filling it with stuff that I would normally say is a bit too expensive for a stocking filler (£5 is top limit I would spend on an item for the stocking!). I've done a lot of eBay shopping and my 10yr old son has new wheels for his scooter, the full set of fast &furious DVDs that he loves, tool box and various tools for use on his bike and scooter (partner is fed up of his going missing!), game for his xbox, CD he wanted and a few other bits for his scooter (grips, stunt pegs). My girls boxes are good to - eldest has hairdryer, tongs, handbag, and some clothes. Middle one has a refurbished tv I paid £15 for, cordless earphones, fluffy bedroom lights, large mirror, smartprice DVD player - all 3 have dressing gowns and slippers in there too. It's so frustrating coming up with a large present idea this has been a more fun way! Plus when I'd Sked for ideas my son wanted wii, another stunt scooter or new bmx and middle daughter just said iPhone 4s or ipad 2 - bit beyond me this year!!!

My son is 11 (will be 12 in Jan) and i am getting him a skateboard as one of his main pressies as he loves the idea of trying to jump ramps etc. Not expensive, but he asked for it.
He is also getting a new DSi XL, some games for it, some books, DVDs, a new football.
Its hard when they get to this age isnt it!

  • I have a soon to be 11yo (1st Jan) and he really wants one of the Slamm scooters that are the fashion of the moment....they are £70-£100 each though for a scooter  !!! Loads of his friends have been getting them for their birthdays recently and the rest are asking for them for xmas :) I won't be getting him one as we already got him a new phone that he asked for so he already has his 'main' present, but he will buy his own with his birthday money :) I know you said your DS likes science stuff but thought I would suggest as it does seem popular x
