Car Insurance - Two Addresses, which to give?

Hi,
I am a student at Southampton Uni and live in University halls for part of the week. Monday evening to Friday morning I live in halls in Southampton and my car is parked on a street nearby. Friday afternoon to Monday afternoon I live at home. Some weeks I travel by train and do not take my car at all (because although the car is mine my parents drive it so if they need to travel anywhere I leave it home for them to use).
I am basically confused as to which address I should declare to the insurance company.
The following is my driving situation:
- I do live (and have my car parked) in Southampton for slightly more time each week than I live at home (see above).
- All post of any kind is delivered to my home address. This is the address I give to any companies that ask for my address (bank, credit cards, online shopping etc) and also the address I gave to my employer
- I use my car much more at home than at Uni. At Uni it's just parked up all week and used for getting between home and Southampton (except for an occasional grocery shop).
The insurance company currently have me down for my home address (however my "occupation" is down as Student - Living Away). Do you think I should change this address to Southampton or keep it as it is?

You need to put the address where your car mainly is in the week as the main address, and then put the postcode of your parents down as where else it's kept if the insurer allows you to.
Obviously some insurers don't allow you to do that but a lot do as I've done that before.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Just tell the insurers what you have written here.
Send it in writing, and go with whatever they decide.0 -
My child has this situation and we start the insurance at the begining of the college year and use that post code, At the end of the college year we revert to the home post code and collect a refund.
We discussed something similar last month but our division of where the car is kept is more clean cut than yours.

Worst case for you
Insurance company is told car is kept at parents address
Car is stolen or damaged outside student address ,you claim for it
What are insurance company going to do when they realise car is kept at student address more than parents address?
Void your insurance
Ring them and explain and ask for whatever they decide in writing0 -
How does it work out over the whole year? Are you an undergraduate student and spend holiday etc. at home? If so, then over the year you will spend more time at home.
I'm currently working away, and my car is insured at my home address, though it's parked near work regularly - though when it is it's in a garage under the flats so probably more secure than on my drive at home! However, my view is that my home is my main address, which is the one (nearly) all my post goes to, and where I'm registered to vote. I haven't informed the insurance company that the car is 'away' a fair bit, but I also wouldn't feel the need to tell them if I visited my parents and stayed overnight.
However, in my case, the car is shared with my husband, which may make a difference.....0 -
Just ring the ins co and explain the situation and let them decide.Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0

I had this discussion with my daughter's insurance company (Admiral), and they were adamant that even though the car spends more days at home than at Uni, we must use the uni address for the insurance. Thereby bumping up the quote by 50%.0 -

My son is a student and insured with Admiral. He generally leaves the car at home while he is away at uni. His premium was lower than if he had been studying at home, due to the fact he won't have access to the car when he hasn't taken it with him. Admiral seems one of the very few companies that will allow for this in their quotes.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages, student & coronavirus Boards, money saving boards.
