Car insurance for 23 year old

Have come to the conclusion that as I now have my son etc etc etc that learning to drive next year is a good idea. I will be 23 next Feb but know that this isn't going to make much difference to car insurance really.

I am completely ignorant in the realm of insurance. What affects it? How new the car is? etc. I mean is it better to save up for a newer car than to get an older car. I know insuring an oldish car is going to be 2.5k a year in insurance roughly. So I am happy to wait in terms of learning to drive but realistically I need to be driving before I graduate.
Money money money.

What effects car insurance? Have a click on the "Insurance" tab on the top of the page. The word insurance is written in red.

Then have a read about car insurance.

In short it is currently in no particular order - driving history, gender, age, postcode, occupation, mileage, where the car is kept over night, make and model of car, engine size, whether you are married, whether you have children, where you got your license i.e UK, EU, whether you are a UK resident, place of birth (There are probably more but I can't think of them at the moment. )
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)
