Faulty laptop- pro rata refund

Hi
I brought a laptop 11 months ago and the mouse stopped working amongst over things so I took it back. It was sent off for repair and because it has taken longer than 20 days I can have a replacement. I have been told if I want a refund I will only get a pro rata one based on the life of a laptop being 6 years. Is this correct? I don't have my receipt but I have my bank statement the shop tracked the purchase.
Can anyone offer any advice please?

Yes, the retailer is entitled to give a partial refund.
The SOGA states that with faulty goods, they should either repair, replace or refund (their choice provided it doesn't inconvienience the consumer too much), and if they choose the refund option then they can make a deduction to cover the use that you've had from the goods.
To be honest, I would say that in this case I think that what you are being offered is a very good deal and is better than you would get from many other places.
Expecting 6 years from a laptop is being fairly optimistic especially if you take the battery into account, and as you've only had the laptop for 11 months then you should get about 85% of what you originally paid refunded.
With the way that laptop prices have been dropping and specifications going up, this should be more than enough to buy a replacement of the same or better spec.
As it is over 6 months since purchase, the retailer could have asked you to prove that the problem with the laptop was due to an inherrent fault, something which it sounds like they are not doing.0
